SanDisk Breaks Records: 8TB SD Card and 4TB microSD Officially Launched
SanDisk is a company that specializes in manufacturing flash memory products, including memory cards, card readers, USB flash drives, and SSDs. As of February 2015, SanDisk was the third-largest flash memory manufacturer in the world. On May 12, 2016, SanDisk was acquired by hard drive manufacturer Western Digital for $20 billion.
Recently, Western Digital announced the world's first 8TB SD card and 4TB microSD card. These new products represent a breakthrough for the brand in the storage sector. The prices for these memory cards have not yet been revealed.
With the SanDisk 8TB SDUC UHS-I memory card, photographers can capture approximately 165,000 RAW photos at 24MP resolution with just one card. This card supports the Secure Digital Ultra Capacity (SDUC) standard and offers a maximum speed of 100MBps. Meanwhile, the 4TB SanDisk microSD card can store over 660 games with a 12GB file size on a Nintendo Switch.
As 8K video and high-resolution photos become more prevalent, the demand for storage capacity is increasing. High-capacity memory cards allow users to continuously shoot video and photos without worrying about running out of space. The 4TB microSD card is also an ideal choice for drones, smartphones, and handheld gaming devices.
However, a downside to these products is the data transfer speed. Both cards use the UHS-I standard, while faster SD and microSD cards adhere to the UHS-II standard. Additionally, Western Digital has not yet disclosed the specific read/write speeds for the two new products.
Currently, the pricing and release dates for these products have not been announced. With such large capacities, users might have to accept a high price point.
This is a significant advancement by Western Digital in meeting the growing storage needs of users. However, more information on performance and pricing is needed for a full evaluation of the products.
Previously, Western Digital had announced a 4TB SD card and a 2TB microSD card. Samsung also launched a 1TB microSD card to meet the demand for large data storage.
