What is Chromecast? Do You Know Everything About Chromecast?
Chromecast is a device that allows you to stream images and audio from your computer or phone to your smart TV. By plugging Google Chromecast into your TV and connecting it, you gain access to a wide range of streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Google Play.
What is Chromecast?
Chromecast is a device that you plug into your TV’s HDMI port, powered by a USB cable. Using your smartphone or computer as a remote, you can access video content from services like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Google Play, and many others. You can also use it to stream nearly any type of content from the Chrome browser on your laptop or desktop.
To know if content on your phone or tablet supports Chromecast, simply look for the rectangular icon with a Wi-Fi signal in the bottom left corner.
When you see that icon, it means the app you’re using can stream content to the TV that your Chromecast is connected to. The Chromecast technology is also part of the Android TV operating system.
The first-generation Chromecast was announced on July 24, 2013, and priced at $35. The second generation, called Chromecast Audio (which only supports audio streaming), was released in September 2015. Another model, Chromecast Ultra (supporting 4K resolution and HDR content), was introduced in November 2016.
The third generation of Chromecast launched in October 2018. The latest model, called Chromecast with Google TV, was announced in September 2020. This is the only Chromecast that comes with an interactive user interface and a remote control.
How Does Chromecast Work?
Although it may seem like you’re casting a video from your device to Chromecast, that’s not exactly how it works. Selecting content on your phone or tablet simply tells Google Chromecast what you want to play. It then uses its own internet connection to stream that content directly. You can also use Chromecast to mirror your phone, tablet, or laptop screen onto your TV.
What Can You Do with Chromecast?
Chromecast gives you access to video and audio content from a variety of services. At the time of its launch, four compatible apps were available: YouTube, Netflix, Google Play Music, and Google Play Movies & TV.
Over time, many other apps have been updated to support Chromecast. At Google I/O 2014, the company announced that 6,000 registered developers were working on 10,000 Chromecast-compatible apps.
Additionally, some games can even be played through Chromecast. This feature can be particularly useful in group settings, like at parties. You and others can take turns playing supported games like Monopoly and Angry Birds Friends.
What Platforms and Apps Support Chromecast?
Essentially, Google designed Chromecast to be compatible with multiple platforms because it works over Wi-Fi. You’ll find the cast button on YouTube, whether you're using Chrome on your computer or the app on your iOS/Android smartphone.
Who is Chromecast For?
Chromecast has several appealing features. To bring it to such a low price point, Google made some compromises. For those who need a remote control or an interactive interface, Chromecast may not be for them. Additionally, you’ll primarily control Chromecast using your phone. Sometimes you might want to quickly pause or switch content, and a remote is much more convenient than unlocking your phone.
Moreover, you’ll need to go into each app individually to find content. Although the Google Home app attempts to address this, it’s not yet perfect.
