Owners of Intel’s 13th and 14th generation CPUs are facing a perplexing issue: games are crashing continuously. This has caused concern within the gaming community, raising questions about the quality of Intel’s high-end products.

According to TechSpot, Intel is investigating reports that their high-end 13th and 14th generation CPUs are causing many games, particularly those developed with Unreal Engine, to crash. This issue has affected many users, leading to a significant number of CPU returns.

Earlier this year, users of the Core i9-13900K and Core i7-14900K experienced game crashes. Common errors included "Out of video memory" messages and games closing abruptly without clear reasons. In more severe cases, systems froze entirely and required a restart.

Many users of high-end Intel 13th and 14th generation CPUs are experiencing issues while playing games

Most issues seem to be related to games using Unreal Engine, such as Fortnite. In response, Unreal Engine developer Epic Games has advised users to adjust BIOS settings as a temporary fix. However, this solution is not always effective and can cause other issues.

Additionally, some game developers have provided their own recommendations to mitigate issues on Intel’s 13th and 14th generation CPUs. For instance, Fatshark, the developer of Vermintide 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, has suggested users lower performance core clock speeds using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU).

Reports indicate that in South Korea, around 10 users per day are returning their 13th or 14th generation CPUs or pre-built computers with these chips, opting for AMD Ryzen processors instead.

In response to user complaints, Intel has confirmed they are investigating the issues and are working with partners to find a solution. However, for now, reducing clock speeds, power limits, and voltage on the 13th and 14th generation CPUs appears to be the only temporary workaround for resolving game-related errors.
