To learn web design effectively, the first thing to understand is the basic knowledge about a website, what a website is, what a domain is, what hosting is, what DNS is,...

I. What is a Website?

A website is an information page that aims to introduce, update information about businesses, products, activities as well as news, share secrets,... for selling products or developing a brand.

When you need to create a Website:

  • When you want to share knowledge, write blog ... to a large audience.
  • When you open a company, you should also make a webpage to introduce information about the company, the business, the products, and the services that you offer.
  • When you want to affirm your brand and want to compete with many opponents.
  • When you want to start a service, sell products online...

II. Knowledge related to Website

1. What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address of a website just like your house has an address.

A domain name consists of multiple components that are put together and separated by a dot.

For example, a domain google.com.vn consists of 3 made-up parts:

  • "google" is the server name
  • "com" is a second-level domain (Second Level). The second-level domain is defined by the network management organization each country. Normally, countries maintain the definition in some fields as COM: Commercial, NET: Network, ORG: Organizations, INFO: Information, EDU: Education, MOBI: Mobile, GOV: Government.
  • "vn" is a top-level domain (TLD). The top-level domain includes the national codes participating in the Internet defined by two letters according to the standard ISO -3166 as USA is US, Vietnam is VN...

2. IP address

IP is an abbreviation for Internet Protocol. All computers, devices connected to the Internet network can share data with each other via IP. Currently, there are 2 versions of IP: IPv4 and Ipv6.

  • IPv4: has a length of 32 bit, expressed as decimal clusters separated by a dot. Example: 192.168.1.23
  • IPv6: has a length of 128 bit, expressed as hex clusters separated by ::. Example of an IPv6 address: 2001:0DC8::1005:2F43:0BCD:FFFF

IP is divided into two types:

  • Static IP: this is a way of setting up IP for each device manually and does not change over time.
  • Dynamic IP: The computer's IP address can change. The process happens entirely automatically and is managed by the DHCP server.

3. What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name System, also known as the domain names resolution system. DNS was invented in 1984 for the Internet, a system that allows establishing correspondence between an IP address and a domain name.

DNS can be understood as an "interpreter" and "conveyor of information". DNS will do the job of translating a domain name into an IP address and vice versa.

For example, transforming www.kiemtientuweb.com to 411.64.84.1 or vice versa translating an IP address into a domain name.
