Anyone using Facebook wants their profile to stand out, and one of the factors that can beautify your profile is to have cover photos and profile pictures with the standard dimensions set by Facebook. So, what are the standard dimensions for a cover photo and profile picture according to Facebook's regulations?

1. What image file formats does Facebook accept?

Facebook allows uploads of .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, and .png files.

Typically, .jpg is used for images with blended colors, while flat colors are best with .gif and .png images. Facebook recommends saving your images as .jpeg with an sRGB color profile.

If you opt to use .jpg, save images for Facebook as sRGB .jpg with minimal compression or maximum file size. Since images are compressed by Facebook upon upload, having the maximum quality file ensures the final image remains sharp.

Apart from Facebook's full customization tabs (limited to 400kb), I haven't encountered any file size restrictions. I've uploaded profile pictures as 2200px square, 3.1 MB files, and they've worked fine.

2. Standard dimensions for fanpage avatars and profile pictures

Your avatar is the most important image you have on Facebook, as it's displayed not only on your profile page but also on your posts, others' posts, and Facebook search results.

On Pages, avatars display at 170x170 pixels on desktop, 128x128 pixels on smartphones, and 36x36 pixels on most feature phones.

Standard size of a fanpage avatar:

  • Maximum size: 2048px x 2048px
  • Minimum size: 168px x 168px
  • Recommended minimum size: 761px x 761px
  • Aspect ratio: 1:1

3. Standard dimensions for personal profile cover photos

Typically, the cover photo is where you can express individuality, so use the highest resolution possible with dimensions of 2037 x 754 pixels.

Standard dimensions for profile cover photos:

  • Maximum size: 2037px x 754px
  • Minimum size: 851px x 315px
  • Aspect ratio: 2.7: 1

Notes on profile cover photos

  • Displays on Pages at 820 pixels wide by 312 pixels tall on desktop and 640 pixels wide by 360 pixels tall on smartphones.
  • Must be at least 400 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall.
  • Loads fastest as an sRGB JPG file that's 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall, and less than 100 kilobytes.

4. Standard dimensions for Facebook fanpage cover photos

The cover photo serves the same purpose for your brand, product, service, as well as your fanpage, so picking the right dimensions is mandatory.

Dimensions for fanpage Facebook cover:

  • Maximum size: 1958px x 745px
  • Minimum size: 820px x 312px

6. Standard dimensions for Facebook Event banners
