One of the most beloved extensions on Chrome, uBlock Origin, is now facing the risk of being disabled. Google's decision is part of its push to transition to the Manifest v3 platform, which promises enhanced security and performance but also poses challenges for users.

According to Raymond Hill, the lead developer of uBlock Origin, this move by Google is a consequence of ending support for the Manifest v2 (MV2) extension platform and shifting to Manifest v3 (MV3).

"uBlock Origin is a Manifest v2 extension, which is why the warning appears in Google Chrome. There is currently no Manifest v3 version of uBlock Origin, so the browser will suggest alternative extensions," Hill explained.

Google Chrome also warns users to remove or replace the uBlock Origin ad blocker with similar extensions. A "Find Alternatives" link directs users to the Chrome Web Store, where they are suggested alternatives like uBO Lite, Adblock Plus, Stands AdBlocker, or Ghostery.

However, it’s not just uBlock Origin users who are receiving this warning. Starting from Chrome version 127, the warning appears on the chrome://extensions page for all MV2 extensions. Users of Chrome's Beta, Dev, and Canary versions have been receiving this warning since June 3, 2024.

In the coming months, Google will disable extensions that still use the MV2 platform and require users to choose an MV3 alternative. While users can temporarily reactivate MV2 extensions, this option will be entirely removed in the future.

Google has announced that the transition to the MV3 standard will be completed by early 2025.
