Quick Charge 3.0: Intelligent and Efficient Fast Charging Technology
Fast charging is highly anticipated by tech enthusiasts. In 2015, Qualcomm introduced a new technology called Quick Charge 3.0, which reduces charging time for phones and tablets by up to four times compared to standard charging. So, what is Quick Charge 3.0, and why has it become so popular?
What is Quick Charge Fast Charging?
Quick Charge is a technology developed by Qualcomm that speeds up the charging process for phones, significantly reducing wait times compared to traditional charging methods. This technology is used in many smartphones from well-known brands such as Samsung, Sony, ASUS, HTC, and especially in premium models.
By increasing the current and voltage, while standard charging operates at 5W (5V-1A), Quick Charge can deliver 5V-2A (10W), 9V-1.67A (15W), or even 12V-1.5A (18W) for some tablet models.
Since Quick Charge is Qualcomm's technology, it only appears on phones that use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors. The technology has gone through several stages of improvement:
Quick Charge 1.0 was available on Snapdragon 600 series processors, using a voltage of 5V with a maximum charging power of 10W.
Quick Charge 2.0 appeared on Snapdragon 200, 400, 800, 810 series processors, with a maximum charging power of 18W.
Quick Charge 3.0 will be discussed below!
What is Quick Charge 3.0?
Quick Charge 3.0 is the third generation of fast charging technology developed by Qualcomm, following its predecessors, Quick Charge 1.0 and 2.0. Qualcomm claims that Quick Charge 3.0 can charge a device up to four times faster than conventional chargers. Quick Charge 3.0 is integrated into phones that use the latest processors, such as the Snapdragon 430, 617, 618, 620, and 820.
1. Advantages of Quick Charge 3.0
The charging speed of Quick Charge 3.0 is 38% faster than Quick Charge 2.0 and twice as fast as Quick Charge 1.0. Compared to traditional charging without Quick Charge, it's up to 85% faster.
Quick Charge 3.0 utilizes INOV (Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage) technology, allowing devices to request the precise amount of power they need, making the charger more energy-efficient.
It fully supports common connections such as USB, micro USB, and USB-C, while also being backward compatible with devices that only support Quick Charge 2.0 and 1.0.
2. Necessary Conditions to Use Quick Charge 3.0
To optimize the charging process with Quick Charge 3.0, you need to ensure two conditions:
Necessary Condition: Your smartphone must support Quick Charge 3.0 technology.
To check whether your phone supports Quick Charge 3.0, you can refer to the following article:
Sufficient Condition: Use a Quick Charge 3.0 adapter. In some cases, it comes with the device, but if not, you can purchase one as long as it supports Quick Charge 3.0. If you use a regular charger or charge via a laptop, the charging speed will not be fast. Of course, Quick Charge technology is backward compatible, meaning you can also use Quick Charge 2.0 or 1.0 chargers with a smartphone that supports Quick Charge 3.0, but the speed will only match the older standards.
Comparing Quick Charge 3.0 with Previous Versions
Quick Charge 3.0 | Quick Charge 2.0 | Quick Charge 1.0 | |
Voltages | 3.2V - 20V dynamic | 5V/9V/12V | 5V |
Max Power | 18W | 18W | 10W |
SoCs | Snapdragon 820, Snapdragon 620, Snapdragon 618, Snapdragon 617 and Snapdragon 430 | Snapdragon 200, Snapdragon 400, Snapdragon 410, Snapdragon 615, Snapdragon 800, Snapdragon 801, Snapdragon 805, Snapdragon 808, Snapdragon 810 | Snapdragon 600 |
In summary, Quick Charge 3.0 is a valuable fast-charging technology that you should consider when choosing a mobile device. With fast charging speeds, high efficiency, and safety, Quick Charge 3.0 will enhance your overall device experience.
